Every year, Horace Drew, founder of Rays of Hope Out- reach, is blessed with sponsors who help him provide Christ- mas gifts for children who oth- erwise would get nothing.
“I have been blessed to have sponsors every year who do- nate bicycles and other things for these kids.
“These sponsors don’t know anything about these kids or their families, but are willing to bring some joy into their lives at least once a year.”
Drew said thanks to his sponsors, he was blessed to provide 60 new bicycles to kids who otherwise would not have received anything for Christ- mas.
“God has truly blessed us this year, and we actually handed out 25 bicycles on Christmas Day.
“Next year, will be bigger
and better for the kids.”
Drew said they were also able to give to a pair of schools, Van Buren Middle School, and Wal- ton Academy.
“I really want to thank my sponsors New Smyrna Church and Bishop Lee, Wilson’s Fu- neral Home, Ray Williams Fu- neral Home, The Legends, Quality Roofing, Williams Moving, Harold’s Plumbing, Port-A-Pit Barbecue, See-Saw Junction, Global Friction Pro- ductions, Dr. McFadden, Dr. Miles of Florida Orthope- dic, Silver Star Transportation, Barbara Triplett, Alvin Holder, Alvin Hadley, and special thanks to Dawn of DPMG for her donation.”
Drew said the challenge to make this a day for the kids starts at the beginning of each new year.
“I want to see more parent involvement and community involvement when it comes to these children.”
USF Plans 10th Annual Stampede Of Service
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Stampede of Service (SOS) Program will once again connect nearly 2,000 University of South Florida students with about 60 organizations throughout Hillsbor- ough County. The event will take place on the morning of Saturday, Jan. 16.
Student volunteers will take part in USF’s largest annual community service project as a tribute to the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Coordinated by Student Affairs’ Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, as a part of the campus’ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Week celebration, SOS reflects the core values in Dr. King’s teachings: justice for all, strengthen communities, empower individuals, and live your purpose.
The program is designed to engage students with current social issues as they experience the ben- efits of giving back to their community by sharing their time, skills, and compassion at service sites throughout the county.
USF System President Judy Genshaft will kick off the day at the opening ceremony on campus at 8:30 a.m. at the Corbett Soccer Stadium before student volunteers board buses for their community volunteer sites.
Teams will be assigned to surveying, cleaning, painting, environmental cleanup and many other activities assisting area organizations, including: Tampa Heights Civic Association; Rebuilding To- gether; Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful; the Dream Center; University Area Community Development Cor- poration, Inc.; and the BAKAS Equestrian Center.
The day will conclude back on campus at the Celebration of Service After-Party in Greek Village at 1 p.m. for student volunteers and the community partners.
