Contest Inspires Students To Learn More About Black History

For the second year, Hills- borough County Public Schools has hosted a student contest called L.E.A.R.N. (Learn Empower Advocate Dream).
The contest challenges stu- dents from grades 3-to-12 to create an artistic interpreta- tion expressing how they have been inspired by a local Black leader or hero in their home, in their school, or in their com- munity.
Ginain Grayes, Depart- ment Manager of Marketing for the District, said the plan is to keep the program going an- nually through funding from community partners.
“This year, we had over 1,200 entries for the contest. We went through a judging phase to get down to 9 stu- dents.

Grayes said it’s important for students to recognize local people who inspired them, and they want to increase the awareness of people who have an impact on the lives of the
children.

County school submits entries for the contest.”
An awards program was held Monday, February 15th that features the 9 students, and all of them were given an “I Can LEAD” recognition bracelet. The top winners re- ceived cash prizes, scholar- ships, technology, and sports memorabilia.
