Tampa General Board Members Decide To Remain Volunteers
DAACO Executive To Join National Leadership Program
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this month board members of Tampa General Hospital voted to provide com- pensation for board members. They decided to pay them- selves from $15,000 to $30,000 per year to serve.
One lone member of the 15- member panel voted against the idea.
After the votes were counted, David A. Straz, Jr., who had served for nearly 20 years, resigned from the board after the decision.
But, the board members re- versed their controversial deci- sion and decided to continue to serve in a volunteer capac- ity.
Board Chairman John A. Brabson, Jr., issued a writ- ten statement rescinding the

decision. The statement said: “While I believe providing compensation to board mem- bers will become a recruiting tool in the future, the board believes this is not the right time to move in that direction.
“After talking to the hospi- tal’s senior leadership, the board has determined it is in the best interest of the hospital

to no longer consider board compensation.”
The decision to become employees came about after a compensation consultant de- termined that there was “a small, but growing trend” to pay board members stipends, a spokesperson for the hospital said.
The board members attend retreats, serve on committees, and meet six times a year.
The board is primarily made up of prominent doctors, philanthropists, civic leaders, and businessmen.

His Fears
Lord, You’ve said in Your Word that there is no fear in love; but per- fect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love (1 John 4:18). I pray You will perfect my husband in Your love so that tor- menting fear finds no place in him. I know You have not given him a spirit of fear. You’ve given him power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). I pray in the name of Jesus that fear will not rule over my husband. Instead, may Your Word penetrate every fiber of his being, convincing him that Your love for him is far greater than anything he faces and nothing can separate him from it.
The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him and delivers them. PSALM 34:7
