Edward Stone, Jr.:
 A Trailblazer In Funeral
 Services Passes
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Mr. Edward Washing- ton Stone, Jr., a trailblazer in funeral services, passed away quietly at home Wednes- day morning with his family by his side. He was 91 years old.
A Tampa native, Mr. Stone attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School, and Fessner Academy in Ocala. A World War II veteran (Army), he received his training in the funeral business in Atlanta. He joined the funeral business in 1949 as a Licensed Funeral Director.
The funeral business was not a happenstance for Stone. He grew up in the business. The Stone family has been in the funeral business since 1916, being one of the first fu- neral homes owned by African Americans. The family cele- brated 101 years anniversary in business last year.
The business was started by Stone’s father, the late Edward W. Stone, Sr. After his death in 1931, Mrs. Fan- nie B. Stone, his wife, con- tinued the business, along with their sons.
In 1989, Stone, Jr., re- turned to Tampa and resur- rected the business at 5016 N. 22nd St. Prior locations for the

funeral home were: downtown near old Police Station, Main St., Plant City and Columbus Dr. There are funeral busi- nesses connected to the Stone family in Ft. Pierce and Cocoa.
Ms. Fannie B. Stone, II,
describes her father as a quiet man, who was a philanthropist in the Tampa community. “He supported many Black-owned businesses and different causes in the community for the underserved. He pur- chased a number of buildings for churches,” she said.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Stone is survived by his son, Renaldo Stone, grand- children and great-grandchil- dren.
A public visitation for Mr. Stone will be held on Mon- day, May, 14, 2018, 10 a. m. – 8 p. m., at Stone Memorial Funeral Home, 5016 N. 22nd St.
