The Youth Ministry at New Mt. Zion M. B. Church, 2511 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa, is planning a youth outreach event for Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 3 p. m.
The Youth Ministry is hosting the event in conjunc- tion with Mama Africana, to present “Black Girlhood in America” at the church, Rev. Larry L.Roundtree, II, Pastor.
Mama Africana is a Chris- tian mentoring program based out of Tampa, reaching Black middle and high school girls. Their aim is to empower Black girls in their ethnic identity and their relationship with Jesus.
DR. RUTH NICOLE BROWN ...Guest Speaker, Black Girlhood In America
The guest speaker for the event will be Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown, Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Brown has written,
performed and produced many plays.
According to Dr. Brown, Black girls are scrutinized by society. She will be sharing her research about “Black girls and how they conceptu- alize freedom, justice and power, as well as their life ex- periences.”
Patricia Nickerson Williams, the New Mt. Zion Youth Advisor says even though the title is about ‘girl- hood,’ the event is open to anyone. “Whether you’re a teacher, social worker, parent or just someone who cares about the well-being of Black girls, we all have a role to play in making sure that they have all they need to succeed.”
Minister W. J. Haynes
