Since January 1, 2016, 54
people have died at the hands of law enforcement in the State of Florida. And, 15 of those individuals were not armed.
“The Counted” is an or- ganization that tracks fatal po- lice encounters and posts them on their website. And, according to the site, 788 peo- ple were killed by police this year. Of the 788, 122 were not armed.
According to the site, of the 788 recorded deaths, 194 were African American.
The statistics further show that at least one person died at the hands of police in every state of the union and the Dis- trict of Columbia.
And, although local offi- cials said it would never hap- pened in Tampa, it did. On August 30th, Levonia Rig- gins, 22, was shot and killed by Hillsborough County Deputy Caleb Johnson during the execution of a search warrant by the SWAT team. It was stated that Rig- gins had sold marijuana to undercover officers on two oc- casions and that a report from a year before included infor- mation that two guns were re- moved from his home. However, Riggins was not armed when he was fatally shot.
On September 21st Pasco County Sheriff’s Office detec- tives arrested former Pasco Detention Deputy, Jorge Febus, 41, for battery by a secure facility employee on a confined person.

While the inmate was in a
