Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston Gets Hot In Two-Minute Drill
Transfer Golson Hopes To Win Florida State Quarterback Job

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. — Everett Golson hopes to prove at Florida State that a dif- ficult finish to his Notre Dame career was an anomaly. But first he has to beat out junior Sean Maguire, who has spent the last two seasons as Jameis Winston's backup.
The two leading candidates for the job replacing the de- parted 2013 Heisman Trophy winner were ushered in sepa- rately Sunday to discuss their quarterback competition.
At the moment, Maguire is listed as No. 1 on the depth chart, but coach Jimbo Fisher has already said that means nothing at this point in any of his team's summer posi- tion battles.
After just three days of prac- tice, Fisher has already been ef- fusive in his praise for the 22-year-old Golson, who be- comes immediately eligible be- cause he earned his undergraduate degree this spring at Notre Dame with a year of eligibility remaining.
There is a wide experience gap between Golson and Maguire, who has played in just one full game and parts of a dozen others, throwing a total of 70 passes compared to Gol- son's 745 at the college level. But the 6-0, 200-pound Gol- son, plagued by interceptions and fumbles, lost his starting job last year at Notre Dame.
"The past is what it is," Gol- son said Sunday. "I've learned and matured."
Russell Wilson's Agent Wouldn't Let
At Florida State, Jameis Winston had a history of put- ting together strong finishes at the end of games.
He showed signs Sunday that he can do the same thing in the NFL. At the end of practice, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran the two-minute drill for the first time this training camp.
Winston was flawless in the drill. He completed all six of his pass attempts during the drill and drove his team into field- goal range. The only damper came on the final play of the drill when running back Charles Sims lost a fumble on a play where he was trying to line up an easy field goal.
Winston had his second straight day with a strong per- formance. Unofficially, he com- pleted 19 of 24 passes in 11-on-11 drills. In seven-on- seven work, he completed

seven of 12 passes. Winston was intercepted only once, by Alterraun Verner.
Bucs coach Lovie Smith said he is starting to see more consistency from his rookie quarterback.
Russell Wilson's huge $87 million contract extension almost didn't happen this summer as the two sides worked right up to the train- ing-camp deadline before reaching a deal. But now that Wilson has a deal in place, he can finally buy his own place to live.
Wilson was a guest on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Thurs- day morning and was asked what he treated himself to after signing the new deal. Ac- cording to Wilson, the only thing he has bought is "new treats" for his two great danes, but he added that he thought his agent would finally let him buy a new house.
"I'll probably end up buying a house now," Wilson told Dan Patrick. "My agent, Mark [Rodgers], would never let me get a house until I signed a deal. So that will be the first thing I get ... I was in the renting process. Now I think I can finally buy a home."
A third-round draft pick,
RUSSELL WILSON
Wilson has been one of the most underpaid players in the NFL over the past three years, but it is also not as if he hasn't made any money. In three sea- sons he has made $2.2 million in salary and would have made another $1.5 million this sea- son without the new deal. But if Wilson really wanted some- thing high-end, it was proba- bly smart to wait until he had the guaranteed money, $60 million of it, including a $30 million signing bonus.

Buccaneers, LB Lavonte David Agree To Deal
After three outstanding sea- sons in Tampa Bay, linebacker Lavonte David is getting a big raise.
David and the Bucs agreed to terms on a five-year exten- sion on Sunday, the team an- nounced. The new deal is worth a total of $50.25 million and in- cludes $25.56 million in guar- anteed money, David's agents told NFL.com.
The 2012 second-round pick was going into the final year of his rookie deal and was sched- uled to make just under $740,000 this season, but David will now make substan- tially more thanks to his new contract.

During the Washington Redskins training camp prac- tice, star receiver DeSean Jackson hurt his right shoul- der. Jackson was competing in one-on-one drills where he leaped up into the air over his defender to make a catch and when he came down he landed on his right shoulder and slid into a football sled.
Jackson remained on the ground for a couple of minutes where he was in serious pain. Eventually he got up and walked out of practice without any assistance. Jackson did not return to practice and was immediately scheduled for an MRI.
Later in the day the Redskins reported that Jackson suf- fered a Grade 2 separation in his right shoulder. This type of sprain is considered a small tear of the ligaments in the shoulder joint.
“It was the impact of when I hit the ground,” Jackson said. “It’s an unfortunate situ- ation. I was just playing and trying to compete and just had a freak accident.”
Last season Jackson suf- fered a similar sprain to the

Lovie Smith: Defense Must Keep Pressure Off Jameis Winston
ESPN's Ron Jaworski was in town Friday for Sports Cen- ter and he laid out his thoughts on what to expect from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season.
Jaworski suggested the Bucs will rely on a strong run- ning game and a good defense to go with rookie quarterback Jameis Winston. Ja- worski also said he expects Winston to get 20 to 22 pass attempts per game.
“I’ve had a rookie quarter- back before [Kyle Orton in Chicago],’’ Smith said. “You have to take that approach and that’s why we are putting more pressure on the defense to play at a certain level. Our running game, Doug Martin has had

an outstanding camp along with Charles Sims.
Smith said he’s been pleased with what he has seen out of Winston so far.

opposite shoulder. However, Jackson downplayed the severity of his injury claiming that it does not feel as bad as the shoulder injury he suffered last season. The Redskins esti- mate that Jackson will be sidelined for two weeks and then the team will reevaluate his condition.
