Just past noon Tuesday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said a man wearing a bandana over his face and armed with a handgun tried to rob a man who was standing behind Ace Beverage Castle, 9401 South Highway 301 in Riverview.

Deputies said Torres, still armed with a handgun, tried robbing the owners of the busi- ness as they sat inside their of- fice. One of the business owners reportedly produced his own handgun and shot Torres several times. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead

M. Battle,
has decided
to sue the Pinellas
County Sheriff’s Office.
Battle, along with Ashaunti Butler, 15 and Laniya Miller, 15, drowned inside of a car after police al- legedly pursued them into a cemetery in Pinellas County. The driver of the vehicle drove into a retention pond, thinking it was just a grassy field, in an
attempt to reach nearby I-275. Clemmons and the Demo- cratic Uhuru Movement have been critical of the Sheriff’s Of- fice version of events after the car plunged in the pond on
March 31st.
Other activists in St. Peters-
burg said they feel not only did the deputies not do enough, they created a smear campaign against the teenagers by dis- cussing their prior criminal his- tory.
Clemmons, speaking through her attorney, said they are likely to file a wrongful death suit.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the agency stands by its investigation into the police response to the al- leged stolen car and the actions of deputies after the crash.
