Currently, all high school students are required by law to pass either the SAT test or the ACT test with a passing score. However, there is a proposal to raise the test scores.
Ross Anderson, Pro- gram Manager, Educational Advocacy for Hillsborough County School Districts, is encouraging students to take and pass either or both of the tests as soon as possible.
“Parents need to be made aware of this proposed change and encourage their children to prepare for the test. The students can take the tests as many times as they would like. The State of Florida Department of Edu- cation will accept the highest score. Also, those students who receive free or reduced lunch can take each of the tests twice for free. I have found that students are not

taking advantage of this.
“It is extremely important for students that qualify for SAT and ACT fee waivers to take full advantage of them. Parents and students should not let failing one test deter- mine if their child will be- come a graduate or receive a
certificate.
“Taking the tests is not
something they should put off until the last minute. It
would be a shame for them to complete all other require- ments to graduate and then receive a Certificate of Com- pletion because they failed the test,” Anderson said.
The students will have several opportunities in up- coming weeks to register for the examinations. Ander- son is encouraging all high school students, especially those in the 11th grade, to take the tests as soon as possible.
