The summer will be a time of changes for residents of Tampa. Some will look for employment, some will take long deserved vacations, and others will get an academic jump on the next school year.
However, Ms. Diane Dantley won’t be concerned with any of those things. In fact, she will be able to do as she pleases and when she pleases. Ms. Dantley will retire from the City of Tampa Recreation Department. She will bring to a close 35 years of service on June 12th.
Ms. Dantley hasn’t made any concrete plans for the next chapter in her life. But, she will now have the time to do many of the things she enjoys such as working more at True Love Mis- sionary Baptist Church, where she is a member; swimming, traveling, arts and crafts.
But, she is most looking forward to being involved with her family. A mother of 3, Ms. Dantley said, “Now, I can be a grandmother.”
She is the grandmother of 12, ranging in age from 8 to 22- years-old. And, one is a student at Bethune-Cookman Univer- sity.
A Tampa native, Ms. Dantley graduated from Leto High School in 1972. She began working with the City of Tampa Recreation Department’s Summer Program. “Every year, I would return, and one year they asked to keep me on perma- nently. I went from aquatics to recreation and I’ve been there ever since.”
During her tenure with the City, Ms. Dantley has worked in several areas of town. She began at Plymouth Park in April 1979. She will complete her last day on the job at Forest Hills Community Center, where she has worked for the past 8 years.
Since that time, she has watched the children become pro- ductive adults. “Over the years, I have met some wonderful peo- ple who have become very successful business owners, law enforcement officers, and others. I’m thankful for having the opportunity to meet these people and play some part in their lives.”
Ms. Dantley said, “I’m retiring, but my love is still there for all the kids.”
And, as for the future, she said, “I’m going to live the retire- ment life. The sky is the limit. Every day is an opportunity and it doesn’t stop until you close your eyes.”
