   JANICE
This week, we honor Janice as our Spotlight fea- ture. Janice knows it will take more than what the others are doing to be successful. She also has the rare ability to remain humble among all of her many admirers. This young lady has managed to stay fo- cused and down-to-earth during her journey, and al- ways has time for friends and family. Congratulations to Janice as this week’s Beauty Un- limited feature.

Changes To Rogers Park Golf Course To Be Discussed On July 12th At Public Meeting
There are several major projects in the works for Rogers Park Golf Course.
The projects include adding a 9-hole short course to accommodate the First Tee program that is housed at Rogers. The 9-hole course build out will be financed by the YMCA, the parent organiza- tion for First Tee. Another project is the City of Tampa’s major water project that will need to carve out an access road on the property.
On Tuesday, July 12th at 5:30 p.m. the Tampa Sports Authority (who manages the Golf course) and the City of Tampa will give the public an opportunity to discuss the project.
Rogers Park Golf Course, built in 1952, and is steeped in Black history. The historic course is on 160-acres surrounded on three sides by the Hills- borough River.
During the days of segregation, Rogers Park was the only picnic area for the Black community in Tampa. The park took the name of its contribu- tor, G.D. Rogers. After church on Sundays, many families came to enjoy the swings, slides, baseball diamond and picnic area. Mayor Curtis Hixon gave
permission to a group of caddies from Palma Ceia Country Club to build a 9-hole golf course.
The first Head Golf Professional, Willie Black, directed his group of volunteers, and, with meticu- lous care, all of the tree removal and shaping was done by hand. Upon its completion in 1952, the Rogers Park Golf Club was born.
In 1976, the City of Tampa gave management rights to the newly formed Tampa Sports Authority, and a $400,000 renovation project was approved. In 2001, a new maintenance compound was com- pleted followed by a new clubhouse in 2002.
The State of Florida has recognized Rogers Park Golf Course by listing it on the National Register of Historic Places.
Anyone wishing to access and participate in the meeting virtually or has public com- ment should contact Tammy Terry- Williams at 813-274-7105 at least 24 hours in advance to submit public comment, ob- tain information and/or an agenda. Anyone wishing to attend in person can come to the Rogers Park Golf Course, 7911 North 30th Street.
