Students at the University of South Florida (USF), who are members of the school’s National Pan-Hellenic Coun- cil (NPHC) are excited about the plaza that is about to be erected on the campus.
The groundbreaking cer- emony for the NPHC Com- memorative Plaza was held on Thursday, August 16, 2018, on the lawn next to the USF Credit Union. Plans are to erect a tribute to the Na-
tional Pan-Hellenic Council on the campus. More than 100 students, alumni, staff and faculty attended the cer- emony.
USF will be the first uni- versity in the state to have the tribute for NPHC mem- bers. By adding the plaza, USF joins all three of Florida’s HBCU campuses. The project has been in the works for several years, and will celebrate the achieve- ments and contributions, lo- cally and nationally, of its members.
The National Pan-Hel- lenic Council is a collabora- tive organization of nine
historically African Ameri- can, international Greek-let- tered fraternities and sororities. The nine NPHC organizations are sometimes collectively referred as the "Divine Nine."
The NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on May 10, 1930 on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D. C. NPHC was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois in 1937.
USF plans to offer the op-
portunity to purchase in- scribed commemorative bricks to be placed near the foot of the plot. Information on this project is forthcom- ing.
The Black Alumni Society is currently planning for the 2018 Reunion that will be held September 28-30, 21018.
