Polk Career Academies Earn Prestigious National Certification
Four career academies in Polk County have achieved a major goal. The four schools have earned national certifica- tion from the National Career Academy Coalition (NCAC).
After undergoing an exten- sive review process, certifica- tion was awarded to Bartow Medical and Fire Academy, at Bartow High School; Central Florida Aerospace Academy, at Kathleen High School; Lake- land Electric Power Academy, at Tenoroc High School, and the Leadership / ROTC Acad- emy, at Summerlin Academy.
Both the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and Lead- ership/ ROTC Academy earned the NCAC’s premier “model” designation.
John Small, Assistant Su- perintendent of Multiple Path- ways Education for Polk County Public Schools said, “National Recognition vali- dates that each academy team is vested in creating meaning- ful connections with the stu- dents they serve. School districts across the country will look at our certified and “model” status academies as they develop their own acad- emy initiatives.”
The NCAC, which advises and advocates for schools’ ca- reer academies, has certified more than 150 academies na- tionwide since the program began in 2005.
Polk county Public Schools career academies work to-
gether with the business com- munity to provide students with a specialized education that helps prepare them for their desired career path.
By earning NCAC certifica- tion, the academies demon- strate that they have met or exceeded national standards for design, faculty, leadership, and student assessment, among other criteria.
These four academies join the Academy of Finance, at Lake Gibson High School, in- creasing the number of nation- ally certified academies to five. The District’s Strategic Plan calls for Polk County to have seven nationally certified acad- emies by the 2017-2018 school year.

Woman Attacked After Being Offered A Ride
The Winter Haven Police Department says a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man who allegedly at- tacked a woman after he of- fered her a ride.
The attacker has been identified as John G. Reger, and that process was aided by the victim removing the tag from Reger’s truck.
On June 28th at 10:15 a.m., police said the 20-year-old victim was walking along U. S. Highway 17 towards the Royal Inn, 3525 Lake Alfred Road where she was headed to pick up items from a room.
A gray Ford pickup truck pulled alongside her and asked if she needed a ride, po-
lice said. The victim accepted and Reger took her to the Royal Inn.
The victim told police she got out of the truck and thought Reger was going to say inside of the truck while she collected the items from the room. However, he waited a few minutes, then followed the victim into the room with- out her knowledge, police said.
Reger reportedly came up from behind the victim and bean to strangle her with both arms around her neck. He then knocked her to the ground and got on top of her, police said.
The victim was able to
fight her way free from Reger and ran from the motel room. As she ran out of the room, police said she went to the truck and was able to get eh tag form the truck before Reger got inside and left.
The victim sustained cuts and scrapes but was otherwise physically unharmed.
Reger, 52, is driving a 2006 gray ford pickup truck without a tag. He is described as a white male with gray hair, a mustache and goatee.
Anyone with information Reger’s whereabouts is asked to call Heartland Crime Stop- pers at 1-800-226-8477, or Detective Larry Brooks at (863) 401-2256.
