The STEP UP program is de- signed to provide academic rigor in a small class setting with an emphasis on basic skills in literacy and mathematics. STEP UP provides an intensive
learning environment designed to equip students with the criti- cal skills necessary to be suc- cessful in eighth grade, thus bringing these middle level learners closer toward their age- appropriate grade level.
The proposed teacher/stu- dent ratio is 1: 20. The program has four core teachers: LA/Reading (Literacy), Math, Science and Social Studies who share up to 80 students per school. The curriculum is de- signed and approved by the Middle School content supervi- sors and is standards-based, fo- cusing on the key benchmarks students need to master in order to be successful in eighth grade.
Curriculum design and de- livery are based on high levels of student engagement and teacher facilitation of learning, thus allowing students to be ac- tive versus passive learners and remain engaged with the con- tent. In addition, delivery of content utilizes flexible group- ing, differentiated instruction and integration of the core sub- jects as appropriate.
Retired Civil Rights Activist Celebrates 80th Birthday
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
When one describes Mrs. Ann Porter, using the word “retired” might be considered a stretch by those who know her. Mrs. Porter celebrated her 80th birthday on June 17th.
Her special day was cele- brated with a small, private family event with her four children and many of her grandchildren.
While her health will no longer allow her to be as ac- tive as she once was, Mrs. Porter is still willing to do whatever she can to ensure a brighter future for tomorrow.
During her lengthy tenure as a community activist, Mrs. Porter served as the President of what is now the Hillsborough County Branch of the NAACP. It was under her guidance that the Tampa Branch and the Plant City

In the political arena, her name was well known as one of the individuals who partic-
ipated in the Civil Rights Movement and the efforts to increase voter education, voter registration, and voter participation in Hillsborough County. Her continued goal is to encourage the next gener- ation to actively take a role in deciding their future by exer- cising their right to vote.
On celebrating her birth- day, Mrs. Porter said, “I had asked the Lord to let me live to see my 80th birthday and He has.”
A retiree of Hillsborough County government, Mrs. Porter is a member of Beu- lah Institutional Baptist Church, and several other or- ganizations, including the Gamma Theta Omega Chap- ter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Hillsborough County Commission on the Status of Women and the Life member of the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP.
