‘ConnectHome’ Pilot Program Provides Internet Access For Children In Public Housing
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
The Tampa Housing Au- thority submitted a pro- posal for Tampa to be one of 28 communities across the country to participate in a public-private partner- ship designed in part to provide internet access for children in low-income households to use when they come home from school.
Thanks to President Barack Obama, Tampa was awarded the pilot pro- gram, ConnectHome. The internet will be available to the children living on Tampa Housing Authority properties.
T.H.A. spokesperson, Lillian Stringer, said even with the relocation of residents from North Boulevard Homes and later Robles Park, they still have thousands of children that will be taking advantage of this opportunity.
“We have plenty of chil- dren to serve in spite of the relocation project going on

in West Tampa. Thanks to a $2 million grant from the Department of Commerce we got 5 years ago, we had already started putting broadband services in some of our buildings.
“We think this is a great and bold move by Presi- dent Obama and this is a great asset for kids who will now be able to complete their school pro-jects at home. For us, this enhances what we already have in place.”
Ms. Stringer said this has also created the poten- tial for jobs for people inter- ested in computer repair.
“We are very excited to be able to expand this ser- vice to our residents and their children. If the kids live in a T.H.A. owned building, the will have ac- cess.”
Among the T.H.A. pro- perties with the service are Belmont Heights Estates, the Oaks at Riverview, En- core, and J. L. Young.
