Minister Offers Tips On Starting New School Year
Chief Names Major To Serve In East Tampa
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
When the new school year starts, it will be a new beginning for both students and teachers. It will be an op- portunity for some returning students who may not have had issues last year to have a fresh start.
And, in keeping with this train of thought, Pastor Moses Brown is offering tips for both adults and chil- dren on how to start this new term.
First, “Think Positive.” “Parents should feel that their children are going to excel this year. They should take an active role in their child’s education. Teacher should not prejudge the child and give him or her a chance. The child may have changed. And students should see this as a new day, a new begin- ning. They should come pre- pared to learn and prepared to give 110%.”
Secondly, “Come Pre- pared To Be A Winner.” “Muhammad Ali prepared himself before every fight. Kids should be prepared by having pens, paper, and all the things they need for class.”
Thirdly, “Always Be On Time.” “Being late doesn’t work when you enter the workforce. Students should discipline themselves now. Successful people prepare the day before. When kids are on time, it shows you value your education.”
And, finally, but perhaps most important, “Don’t for- get to pray.” “When I was growing up, I faced many un- pleasant situations. But one of my teachers told me ‘don’t

forget to pray.’
“The Lord has helped me
through many situations and I told myself that I am better than what people said about me. I realized that I couldn’t do it on my own.”
Last year, Pastor Brown donated many vol- unteer hours at Potter Ele- mentary School. The school had been struggling and was rated an “F” by the Depart- ment of Education.
However, through the hard work of the students, staff, teachers, and Ms. Melanie Hill, its principal, the school raised its grade.
Ms. Hill has been reas- signed to serve as the princi- pal of Bing Elementary School. However, she guided Potter Elementary to im- prove its grade from an “F” to a “C,” Pastor Brown said.
In recognition of his in- spiration and positive en- couragement, Ms. Hill presented Pastor Brown
with an award.
As for the upcoming year,
Pastor Brown said, “This new school year, we will not just survive, we will thrive.”
On Monday, Tampa Po- lice Chief Brian Dugan named a new major to serve in East Tampa. Captain Calvin Johnson has been promoted to the rank of Major.
Major Johnson will as- sume the duties of Major for
the Tampa Police Depart- ment’s Uniform District III, which is located in East Tampa.
Major Johnson is re- placing Major Rocky Ratliff, who is retiring after serving the City of Tampa for 30 years.
