Chappie - Director Neil Blomkamp (District 9) brings to life the first robot named Chappie (Sharito Copley) with the ability to think and feel for himself. Chappie has to learn how to survive the mean streets of South Africa. Also starring Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. Very violent. This movie started slow, but ended up as a well-written film. Surpris- ingly, good, nice twist at the end. Must see for sci-fi fans. No. 1 at box office. Made $14.4M. (Budget $49M). ****
Focus - A con man (Will Smith) introduces a young woman (Margot Robbie) to the tricks of his trade. Three years later, the two see each other again in Argentina when he is asked by a race car bil- lionaire to set-up a con on his rival owner. Must-see to learn how the con game business operates. Very entertaining and interesting. Made $34M U. S. / Foreign $37M. (Budget $50M). ****
The DUFF - A high school senior (Mae Whitman) finds out she has been labeled the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. This teen movie was pretty funny. Your kids will enjoy this teen com- edy. Made $26M. (Budget $8.5M). ***1⁄2
McFarland, USA - A cross country coach (Kevin Costner) transform a team of runners into championship contenders. Surprisingly, very good sports film. Made $29M. (Budget N/A). ****
Fifty Shades Of Grey –
Based on the 100 million books sold, this drama/ro- mance is about a student, Anastasia (Dakota John) who meets a sexually tormented billionaire, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), who goes through great lengths to break her down mentally and sexu- ally. Note: Did he know he had her at “Hello.” This film was drama free. Someone who read the books said that the drama will come in the next movie “50 Shades of Dark- ness.” Made $156M. Jupiter Ascending - A genetically engineered war- rior (Channing Tatum) is sent to Earth to protect a young woman (Mila Kunis) who does not know she is a Queen on Jupiter. A powerful family who lives on Jupiter is on a mission to kill her. This fu- turistic action film moves quick and the effects are worth-seeing. Andy Wa- chowski (The Matrix) is the director. Made $45M. (Bud- get $176M). ***1⁄2
The Boy Next Door - A divorced woman (Jennifer Lopez) falls for a younger man (Ryan Guzman) who lives next door to her. Their relationship soon turns deadly when the man refuses to let go. If you like Jennifer Lopez, as we do, then you will enjoy this thriller. Made $34M. (Budget $4M). ***1⁄2
American Sniper - Di- rected by Clint Eastwood, this film tells the true story about Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle’s life (Bradley Cooper) as a sniper in Iraq. Kyle’s pinpoint accuracy saved countless troops on the battlefield and he did four tours in Iraq which affected his family back home. Nomi- nated for Oscar’s best movie, director, and actor, this movie comes under heavy scrutiny because the WAR in Iraq was unjust. Made $337M. (Budget $58M). ****
Selma - Directed by Ava DuVernay, this drama takes a look back in Martin Luther King’s (David Oyelowo) cam- paign and struggles to secure equal voting rights by march- ing from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery in 1965. Every young kid and adult should go see this powerful movie to understand how hard it was to VOTE. Nominated for Oscar’s best film, the best di- rector (DuVernay, a Black fe- male director) and Best actor (Oyelowo) were noticeably snubbed. When a movie is nominated for best film usu- ally the director and main actor are nominated. Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey exec- utive produced. Made $50M. (Budget $20M). ****
