Actress Winner In 35 Years
Major congratulations are in order for Daniel Kaluuya as he won the Golden Globes’ Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award for his role as Black Panther Chair- man Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.
On Sunday night (Feb. 28), the British actor kicked off the night as the first award recipi- ent and—thankfully after a bit of technical difficulty—deliv- ered his first Golden Globes acceptance speech. After thanking his family, friends, and colleagues, he thanked London rapper C. Biz for creating “The Biz Is Mine,” a song he’d listen to before every speech, Judas and the Black Messiah‘s director Shaka King, Ryan Coogler, and his castmates LaKeith Stansfield and Dominique Fishback.
“Man, this took all of me. I gave everything. Like the great Nipsey Hussle says, ‘We’re here to give ’til we’re empty’
DANIEL KALUUYA
and I gave everything,” Kalu- uya said. “And I couldn’t give it to a more nobleman and that’s Chairman Fred Hampton. I hope genera- tions after this can see how brilliantly he thought, how brilliantly he spoke, and how brilliantly he loved. He taught me about myself and made me grow as a man and I appreci- ate him with all my heart. There’s a lot of information about how he died, but I hope [that] you people out there will grow and learn about how incredibly he lived.”
Andra Day won the Golden Globe best actress in a drama trophy for her per- formance in Hulu's The United States vs. Billie Holi- day, becoming the second- ever Black actress to win the category and the first to do so in 35 years.
While virtually accepting the award during Sunday's ceremony, an overwhelmed Day noted of her fellow nom- inees that she was "in the presence of giants" as she thanked those involved with Lee Daniels' bio-drama about the immortal jazz singer for being "so engaged in the story."
She then thanked the "transformative, dynamic Billie Holiday, who just

transformed me with this role and with her presence and with her spirit."
In the press room follow- ing her win, Day noted the significance of the awards ac- colade. "The thing I take from Billie more than anything is the strength of a black
woman," she said. "To know that the last person who won this award was Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Pur- ple is so not representative of how many black women’s sto- ries have been told sensation- ally and need to be told by the amazing talented actresses who do this."
She continued, "On set, they’d say, 'Don’t worry, you’ll never have to go through this again. There’s not that many meaty roles for black women.' And I go, 'Who the hell else has meatier roles and meatier stories than black women?' So I take that strength with me. This woman shouldered all of this all on her own. She is the godmother of civil rights and I take that strength with me."

Jamie Foxx, right, voiced lead character, Joe Gardener.
The late Chadwick Boseman was honored with a Golden Globe on Sunday for his incredible turn in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."
Boseman's wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, ac- cepted the award -- which was for best performance by an actor in a motion picture- drama -- in his honor.
Boseman died in August at age 43, after fighting a pri- vate battle with colon cancer.
The moving and heartfelt speech, which was a fitting tribute to a hero gone too soon, is below:
"He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sac- rifice.
“He would thank his in- credible team Michael Greene, Azeem Chiba, Nicki Fioravante, Evelyn O'Neill, Chris Huvane, Logan Coles.
“He would thank his team on set for this film -- Deidra Dixon, Sian Richards, Craig Anthony and An-

The 78th Golden Globe Awards are off to an excellent start, as Disney-Pixar’s 2020 film ‘Soul’ has won the Best Animated Feature award! ‘Soul’ marked the first time a Disney-Pixar film has had a Black lead.
The movie follows Joe Gardener (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a jazz musician and music teacher who teeters on death following a fall down a manhole. Gardener spends
the core of the film tethered to his passion, music, but ul- timately realizes that his pur- suit is not all life has to offer. In the end, he has a better un- derstanding of what our earthly experiences are truly all about and that we can spend our time caring for oth- ers.
The film grossed over $120M worldwide and is con- sidered one of Pixar’s best works.
drew Carlone.
“He would say something
beautiful, something inspir- ing, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you're meant to be doing at this moment in his- tory.”
Boseman and Ledward began dating in 2015 and were married in secret shortly before the actor's death.
The star was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016, but never discussed his ill- ness in public as he took on the role of T'Challa, aka Black Panther, in the Mar- vel Cinematic Universe.
Boseman is widely tipped to be awarded posthu- mously at the Oscars for his incredible performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and he could also compete in the Best Supporting Actor category for Spike Lee drama Da 5 Bloods.
