As Kentucky Derby Looms; Lawmakers Battle Over Removal Of Confederate Monument
LOUISVILLE, KY -- Accord- ing to the Washington Post, racial disparity and the Kentucky Derby have long gone hand-in-hand and this year is no different. As the famed race prepares to burst out of the starting gate in its 142nd year, issues stemming from race relations loom large. The races, which begin on Saturday, gener- ally draw around 266,000 visitors every year. But nearby, playing out in courtrooms, a battle over a Con- federate monument is underway.
Last Friday, University of Louisville president James Ram- sey and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer held a surprise press con- ference to announce a Confederate monument would be moved “to a more appropriate place. The 70’ tall monument, was erected in 1895 and includes 3 bronze statues of Confederate soldiers, and stands near the University’s art museum.
Kentucky, in fact, was never part of the Confederacy. Along with the other border states - Delaware, Missouri and Maryland - it was a slave state, but never se- ceded from the Union during the Civil War.
The announcement came a week after University of Louisville professor of Pan-African studies Ricky Jones wrote an op-ed in the Courier-Journal, demanding the monument, which he referred to as a “towering granite and bronze eyesore glorifying the nadir of America’s past,” be removed.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am. I think this statue being on the campus is somewhat akin to flying the Confederate flag over the (uni- versity’s) administration building” Jones said.” But his excitement may have been premature.
On Monday, Jefferson Circuit
Judge Judith McDonald- Burkman issued a restraining order forbidding the city of Louisville from removing the statue, according to reports. The order was sought by Everett Cor- ley, a Republican real estate agent running for Congress, who filed a lawsuit against Fischer over the plan to remove the Confederate statue; Corley called removing the statue akin to “book burning,” according to reports.
Ballerina, Misty Copeland Gets Her Own Barbie Doll
PENNSYLVANIA -- Ms. Ida Keeling isn't slowing down for anyone. The 100-year- old runner stole the crowd with her 1-minute, 17.33-second 100-meter dash Saturday after- noon at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, speeding her way to a world record, NBC Sports reports.
Ms. Keeling is the official holder of the record for the fastest 100-meter by a woman 100 years or older. According to the report, there is no data on USA Track & Field or masters- athletics websites for a previous record holder.
“I’ll be 101 in a couple of weeks,” Ms. Keeling told NBC Sports after the race. “I’ve never seen nothing like this crowd. Maybe that’s what the excite- ment was.”

And Ms. Keeling has some advice for those who may be wondering how she does it.
“Love yourself, do what you have to do and what you want to do,” she said. “Eat for nutrition, not for taste. And exercise at least once a day.”
Misty Copeland has been immortalized by Mattel. The Barbie creator debuted its Misty Copeland doll Mon- day, and I'm sure that, just like Ava DuVernay's doll, it'll fly off the shelves. The doll that honors Copeland, who made history when she became the first African-American woman to be named principal dancer at the world-renowned Ameri- can Ballet Theatre, is just an- other step in Mattel's commitment to diversity and inclusion and part of its Sheroes Collection.
"I always dreamed of be- coming an ABT ballerina, and through Barbie, I was able to play out those dreams early

The Misty Copeland doll will is available for preorder on Amazon.com and Mattel's site.
