A Silent Retreat Takes A Dark Turn
Helen Weston
KEY SELLING POINTS
A fast pace, gripping crime novel with a monastic setting in North Cumbria that takes readers on a journey to
a silent community under the vow of Obedience.
The story explores the dark side of power in a closed community.
It is December 2021 and Lizzie Ferguson has signed up for a silent retreat in an attempt to banish the
disturbing ghosts uncovered by lockdown.
The retreat takes place at her old convent in the borderlands of north Cumbria, where she hopes to arrive
incognito. Unfortunately, the retreat conductor is Sister Magdalen, the nun behind the traumatic events of
twenty-five years ago, and there is nowhere to hide.
Things are clearly not right with the Community and Lizzie is quickly caught up in a search for her old friend
Maria, now the Reverend Mother, who has disappeared, hours after begging Lizzie for help.
Lizzie believes that Magdalen is at the bottom of it and fears for Maria’s life. As the tension ratchets up, she
enlists the help of her husband Hugh, and two of the sisters. But are they prepared to risk exposure to uncover
the truth? Can the Community rediscover its soul and will Lizzie find her own version of redemption?
Helen Weston lives in Cumbria and is a therapist and writer, with close links to the Borderlines book festival.
She is married to a former Benedictine abbot and spent five years in a convent after studying English at Oxford
and working abroad for a year. Her memoir, The Winter is Past (1995), chronicles that time.
