In Other Woods
The Story of a Small School
Mary-Ann Ridgway
KEY SELLING POINTS
Explores the importance of the relationship between life and education rather than focusing on the methods
and technical aspects of learning.
The book offers the reader a friendly approach to parents who question the traditional methods used in their
children’s education, particularly now with the rising numbers of children with mental health issues.
Education has an essential role to play in transforming society.
In Other Woods emerges from over two decades of experience in developing an independent school that
actively held at the forefront the essential question “what constitutes right education?”.
Shedding conventional and institutional approaches, this endeavour embraced the urgent challenge of seeking
a new paradigm for nurturing sane young minds and responsible, caring adults - a task that is increasingly
relevant today with the growing malaise of the new generations.
Distilled here are some of the author’s observations, reflections, challenges and insights gained from her
pivotal role in this educational journey; no indulgence in theory, no attempt to provide final answers, but rather
a refreshing selection of raw material to invite a deeper inquiry into an issue vital for all of us.
Mary-Ann Ridgway is a mother, educator, and citizen of the world, currently living in France. She co-created
and sustained for twenty years a community school where learning was not limited to the acquisition of
knowledge and skills but included a live engagement into understanding our human nature and our relationship
to the planet. In Other Woods is Mary-Ann’s first published book with Troubador Publishing.
