        KEY SELLING POINTS

A memoir for anyone feeling alone and scared, and for people coming to terms with a new and frightening
          condition.
Richard Brown embarks on a quest for identity and meaning in a world that labelled him by his condition.
This memoir gives anyone labelled as disabled the understanding and confidence they need to stand up for
themselves and change their own lives.

Disability is Other People: My Superhero Story is not a story about overcoming disability but living well
with it. Drawing on experience and humour, Richard shares everything he has learned through his triumphs and
mistakes, deconstructs traditional perspectives on disability and draws out the links to other oppressed
communities struggling for Equality. He shows how the attitudes and behaviours of Other People are disabling
forces. He considers some of the big issues he has faced along the way: Hope, Death, Ableism, The Media,
        and Political Correctness.

It is not until Richard retires that he realises that volunteering and getting to know Other People is actually the
core value in life. He shows us how to recognise these two different groups of other people, offers solutions
and his own advice on how to live with disability. Does he have Superpowers after all? It is a remarkable story
of self-discovery, luck, resilience, and love. This is a powerfully positive memoir which enlightens us that
Disability is a fundamental issue for humanity.

Richard C Brown, at 14, was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a progressive and incurable neurological
condition. He enjoyed a fulfilling career in Local Government working in Equalities, until his unexpected
retirement in 2012. Since then, he has had a long-standing association with Ataxia UK and undertaken a wide
variety of volunteering roles. In 2021he was awarded an MBE for services to disability and to his community.
        He lives in Oxfordshire.
