SERI MENANTI
To serve as the personal fief of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar (YDPB) when the confederacy
of Negeri Sembilan was first established in 1733. It has been the seat of every Yang di-
Pertuan Besar since Yamtuan Melewar.
One of Seri Menanti’s most recognizable landmarks is the four-storey timber palace, the
Istana Lama Seri Menanti commissioned by Tuanku Muhammad in 1901 to replace an
earlier palace burned by British forces during the conflict in Sungei Ujong in the 1870s.
It served as the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar until 1931, when a new
palace the Istana Besar Seri Menanti was completed. The Istana Lama is also noted for
being the birthplace of Tuanku Abdul Rahman which is the country’s first YDPA.
