TUANKU MUHAMMAD IBNI
AL-MARHUM TUANKU ANTAH
The Great Yamtuan Seri Menanti, Tuanku Muhamad Ibni Tuanku Antah was appointed the first Negeri
Sembilan Speaker in 1898. The appointment was based on the English and the Fourth Law.
The appointment was also a move by the British Government to resolve dissatisfaction among the
people, especially conservative leaders who claimed that Yam Tuan Tuanku Muhamad was the one who
should rule the Government according to custom.
Yamtuan Tuanku Muhamad was the seventh Yamtuan Seri Menanti who succeeded his father Tengku
Antah who passed away in 1888. He was appointed by the consent of the six chiefs, Johol, Ulu Muar,
Jelebu, Teraci, Pasir and Inas.
In 1889, Tuanku Muhamad placed Seri Menanti and his colonies under British protection. Thus, Negeri
Sembilan became a coalition under British protection without political understanding.
In order to facilitate the administration and expand its influence while re-uniting the settlements or the
