THE YANG DI-PERTUAN BESAR

• Tuanku Munawir (1960-1976)

Between 1937 to 1939, he served in the FMS volunteer Forces. In 1954, he was appointed as Regent of

Negeri Sembilan while his father traveled to United Kingdom and served again between 1957 and 1960 when

his father hold the position as YDPA. He was elected as Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan upon his
father’s death in 1960.

• Tuanku Ja’afar (1967-2008)

After he returned to Malaya in 1952 he worked for a time in the civil service. However, he went back to

United Kingdom and enrolled in a diplomatic service course in 1956. Tuanku Ja’afar began his career as a

diplomat in 1957. He was elected as Yang di-Pertuan Besar in 1967 and installed on 18 April 1968. Between 1994
and 1999, he served as YDPA while his consort Tunku Ampuan Tuanku Najihah binti Tunku Besar Burhanuddin

served as Raja Permaisuri Agong.

Tuanku Mukhriz received his early education at various schools in Negeri Sembilan and later at Aldenham

School in England. He obtained an LLB from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and went to work in
the financial sector. He being elected as Yang di-Pertuan Besar on 29 December 2008 but before that he held the

title of Tunku Besar Seri Menanti.
