FIRST YANG
DI-PERTUAN AGONG
The selection of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the Independent Federation
of Malaya was held on 3 August 1957 in a Special Conference of the Malay Rulers at the Meeting Hall of the
Federal Government Council, Kuala Lumpur. This special and historic meeting was chaired by the Sultan of Kedah
and was attended by all the Kings and Sultans except the Sultan of Johor who was in Europe and was represented
by the Crown Prince. This historic inaugural conference saw the selection of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan
Agong and the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for an independent Federation of Malaysia. This selection was
carried out in accordance with Part 4, Article 32, Clause 3 of the Malay Federation Constitution. Tuanku Sir Abdul
Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan was appointed as the first
Yang di-Pertuan Agong of the independence Malay Federation whislst Tuanku Sir Hishamuddin Alam Shah ibni
Almarhum Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, the Sultan of Selangor as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
