When A Death Occurs
Handling the death of a loved one is never an easy task. We have put together some important information you may need to begin the process of designing your loved one’s final farewell. As you begin to cope with your loss, we encourage you to enlist the help and support of a trusted friend or family member in making the necessary arrangements.
We are here to help you and your loved ones through this difficult time. Any questions that may arise about which options are available to you, and what the arrangement process will entail can be discussed with one of our Funeral Directors.
Within Hours
When a death occurs unexpectedly at home or in the workplace, contact emergency personnel (911) immediately. From here, the RCMP will be dispatched, followed by the coroner and the coroner will advise you of what is to follow.
When a death occurs expectedly at home, both the doctor and the home care nurse will have advised the funeral home in advance. After the time of death you may call Devlin Funeral Home when you are ready for us to transfer your loved one into our care.
When a death occurs while your loved one is in a hospital, care facility, or hospice program; the professional staff will notify you and instruct you on your next steps. If your loved one dies in the hospital a nurse will ask you to call us so that we may transfer your loved one to Devlin Funeral Home. If your loved one dies in one of our other local care facilities the staff will first contact the next of kin and once the family is ready the staff of the care facility will contact Devlin Funeral Home at which time we will transfer your loved one into our care.
When you are ready you may call us to set up an appointment to meet with us to make arrangements for your loved one’s final disposition.
When a death occurs on the lower mainland or in the Powell River area, Devlin Funeral Home would be honoured to bring your loved one home at no cost. This allows you to make the arrangements with your family and friends without the need to travel off coast. We are available on the coast so that you are able to receive documents and cremated remains in our community. We take pride in giving prompt and caring service in all situations.
Within the First Few Days
Your initial call with our funeral director will allow us to enquire about the information we need to transport your loved one to the funeral home. At this time we can answer any questions that surround your initial concerns. Once your loved one is in the care of Devlin Funeral Home, we will book an arrangement appointment with a Funeral Director at your convenience.
We encourage you to bring family, friends, and even your pet to support you through the arrangement process. In the following section, this booklet will inform you on which documents to bring to the first arrangement.
At the arrangement, we will be able to discuss your arrangements in greater details and provide you with the documents required to apply for the CPP death benefit, spousal benefit, and a list for settling the estate. We are always available in your time of need to provide emotional support, a sympathetic ear, and careful guidance.
