NTDs IN BENIN
NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES (NTDs) affect more than 1 billion people worldwide
causing disability, childhood malnutrition, blindness and reduced productivity. NTDs strike
at the heart of poor and marginalized communities; their effects can be devastating.
Fortunately, 7 of the most prevalent NTDs can be targeted using safe, effective medicines.
Through multiple rounds of treatment, these diseases can be controlled or eliminated. NTD
programs are critical in creating a healthier, thriving, and more equitable world.
PEOPLE AT RISK IN BENIN = 1 million people
More than 11 million people in Benin are at risk for one or more NTD. In 2007,
Benin’s Ministry of Health established the National Program for the Fight against
Communicable Diseases (PNLMT) to address NTDs, providing treatment in
communities and schools.
ENVISION support has been critical in helping the PNLMT to complete disease mapping
and expand treatment to all people at risk for NTDs in Benin. Since 2013, ENVISION has
assisted in the implementation of district-level treatment campaigns for lymphatic
filariasis (LF) and onchocerciasis across all 67 endemic districts. ENVISION continues to
support the PNLMT as they work to expand treatment for trachoma to all people at risk,
while also controlling schistosomiasis (schisto) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH).
