run to my mom complaining, “Mom! Todd is saying everything I say!” It was a complaint that I would immediately parrot, only to suffer the inevitable consequences from a mother too stretched to deal with her son’s insanity.
It was rather primal game and a traditional one that I now was asking Sarah to participate in. If Sara had had a big brother, she may well have not agreed to my offer.
But she accepted, so I got to work.
Ten minutes later, Sarah stood up, patted the tears from her face and took my hand while I escorted her to the back of the aisle. I gave her a gentle hug, turned, and with all eyes on me, my shoes again resounded a loud click...click...click as I walked down the aisle to the front of the wedding room.
I smiled warmly at a visibly relieved groom and turned to face Dan and Sarah’s family and friends. Stretching my arms wide in invitation, I proclaimed: “Ladies and gentlemen, please stand for the entrance of the bride!” The music shifted, the guests stood in unison, and a beautiful, five-foot-four, big- eyed, smiling Sarah gracefully glided down the aisle, past 500 of her family and friends, to take her groom’s hand.
Sarah and Dan turned to face me, and on that day, Sarah married the man of her dreams.
