Any plan, strategy or treatment protocol to change how you think about getting on that pressurized, metal tube that is going to hurtle you through the air at 500 mph, 30,000 feet above the ground, must incorporate the three elements of neuroplasticity to create permanent change. Many therapists intuitively understand this concept, and the three elements have been built to varying degrees, into modalities like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy and Hypnotherapy.
Why are these three components so necessary? There is a saying in the neuroplasticity world: “The neurons that fire together, wire together.” Neurons are cellular networks in your brain that transport information with both chemicals and electrical signals. Prior to his million dollar offer, when Lars was about to kick a football, the neurons that held his intent would automatically transport the signal to the series of motor neurons that would in turn make him kick the ball with his left foot. Lars had intentionally kicked a ball with great success with his left foot possibly millions of times, so this neuronal pathway was very well-wired together.
