WELCOME
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans, and was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York
on December 4, 1906, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The Fraternity’s mission is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
The Flint community has been home to two “Alpha” Chapters for many years; an alumni chapter since 1953 and a city-wide college chapter since 1973. I’m excited and honored to provide
you with an update on our mentoring and leadership development efforts in this inaugural newsletter. 25 years ago, a challenge was issued to develop and implement a youth program that would allow brothers to help make the Flint community a place where young men of color can nurture and fulfill their dreams
We’ve done that and more! The program has grown and evolved, but we continue to challenge Esquires to defy stereotypes and negative statistics, and to provide positive peer pressure
and examples for one another and our community. The chapter’s work and the program have been recognized at local, state, and national levels; receiving the Priority Children Children’s Champion Award, the Governor’s Service Award, and the Charles H. Wesley Award from our national organization.
We continue to make every attempt to recognize the work and talents of current members
and have evolved to awarding scholarships and other items of recognition to every graduating senior. Our former members have attended colleges at various places throughout the country including The University of Michigan, Fisk University, Howard University, Michigan State University, Mott Community College, and even Yale University. Their accomplishments are stellar. Four have been Bill Gates Scholars, and many of them are now working professionals, fathers, and mentors to other young men.
Join us as we celebrate and reflect upon 25 years of Academic Excellence and the Achievement of Educational goals via our commitment to the vision and purpose of the Alpha Esquire Mentoring & Leadership Program in Flint, Michigan.
