                 LESSON 1: NUMBER RECOGNITION


                 A. READING AND WRITING NUMBERS

                          The world owes to the Hindus and the Arabic the evolution and the propagation of the

                 number system. This system of numeration is called the Hindu-Arabic system. Most of the world          M1_L1
                 today use the Hindu-Arabic System of numeration. When we talk of numeration, we are referring

                 to the study of numerals and their properties.

                          The  Hindu-Arabic  system  of  numeration  uses  10  as  its  base.  Basic  to  business
                 mathematics is the decimal system with the ten basic digits-0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9. Every number

                 comprises one or more of these digits, the values of which depend upon their positions or places in
                 the given number. There are ten distinct digits to tell the number of ones, the number of hundreds,

                 thousands, and so on. Thus, ten-ones is ten, ten-tens is one hundred, ten hundred is one thousand,
                 and so on.

                          Example 1 would be written as 86.362,109.474. This is read as: "eighty-five billion, three
                 hundred sixty-two million, one hundred nine thousand and four hundred seventy-four.
                          Example 2 would be written as "four hundred twenty-nine million, Seven hundred sixty
                 thousand, three hundred twelve, and twenty-five hundredths.
                          Example3  would  be  written  as:  "five  thousand,  six  hundred  three,  and  one  hundred
                 seventy-three thousandths.
