LESSON 1: A. READING AND WRITING NUMBERS
The numbers expressed in Hindu-Arabic numerals are divided into groups called periods.
Periods are separated by commas to make the reading of the numerals easier. Each period consists
of three digits: the first digit from the left of the decimal point expresses the number of units, the
middle digit tells the number of tens and the third digit tells the number of hundreds. The sequence
of periods is from the left of the decimal point: units, thousands, millions, billions, trillions,
quadrillions, etc. Each period contains three digits.
Among the important features of the decimal system are the following:
1. The principle of addition is used.
2. The principle of multiplication is used.
3. The principle of place value is used. The value of a digit is ten times the place value of the
digit after it.
4. The use of zero as a placeholder.
