Re-Discovering Mary
The Orthodox Understanding of the Mother of God
by Lawrence R. Farley
In the history of the Bible and the life of the Church, there is a historical example that represents the most extraordinary way of accepting God’s will, affirming hu- man freedom, and reversing the course of humankind. Fr. Lawrence finds this exam- ple in the person of the Holy Virgin Mary, a young Hebrew woman and—the Mother of God. In this person’s life and behavior, the Church has seen the expression of multiple gifts of the Holy Spirit and the most excellent form of human self-tran- scendence and ecstatic love.
The author deals with the person and role of the Theotokos in accordance with the Holy Scriptures and the Tradition of the Church. From his detailed analysis of the New Testament and lucid observations, it becomes evident that the piety of the The- otokos is not something that abruptly burst onto the stage in the early fifth cen- tury, as a phenomenon triggered by the debates over Nestorius. According to the author, the title Theotokos (“birthgiver of God”), bestowed on her by the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in AD 431, comes from a centuries-long history of her devotion among the Christians.

God Views us Through Love
by Ignatije Midić,
Bishop of Braničevo-Požarevac
The present volume collects essays and ar- ticles written by Bishop Ignatije on man within history and within the Church; on the roots of the Church according to Saint Maximus the Confessor; on how God views us through love; about a call to re- discover our true self in our neighbor; on reconciliation in society and policy; on iconizing that which is to come seen in the Iconography of Stamatis Skliris. Charac- teristics of Ignatije’s theological synthesis are found especially in these areas: Chris- tology, ecclesiology and anthropology. For Bishop Ignatije, spirituality in Christian understanding does not mean a merely in- dividual fulfillment of God’s command- ments, but a life based on the fellowship in the Church, which is the community of freedom and love. The ecclesial way of life is manifested as liturgical community, which involves the eschatological dimen- sion of the existence in this world.
