GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

Geographical Indications (‘GI’), similar to trademarks, are distinctive
signs used to distinguish goods or services in the market. GIs identify
the origin of a goods or service and consumers are able to associate
a specific quality with a goods or service. As opposed to trademarks,
however, geographical indications identify a good as originating from a
particular place. This type of intellectual property is generally applied for
by concerned authorities or relevant organizations of specific countries
as opposed to businesses for their business purposes.

In order to apply for certification, the applicant has to provide evidence
of historical background of the good such as ancient documents and the
            uniqueness of the good.
