ABSTRACT

The city of Essaouira has a very rich past, its development should not be to the detriment of this
wealth, the lack of vegetation, the absence of effective consideration of climatic hazards in the design
of architecture and urban development, the neglect of public space, the shortcomings of the intra-
urban transport network, social and spatial segregation are problems that must be taken into account
in the development of the city.

The idea would therefore be to take advantage of the city's natural resources to design a project that
will transform the whole city of Essaouira, a city that stands out as much for its rare and urban
landscape qualities as for a territory demonstrating its "know-how".

The reconversion of the chosen site, which is the former industrial district of the city, is illustrated as
an innovative mixed renewal based on the characteristics of a productive city. Opening up the site
does not only mean making it accessible to all, but to really inhabit it through mixed programmes
aimed at preserving and improving the quality of the environment.
