Game 1 – Always tough to start against the best team in the draw, and the tallest, but the girls
brought their strong defence early. They ran hard and fought hard, and hustled Colac out of a lot of
points.
Game 2 – Hot conditions and another very tall team greeted the girls for the second game of the
day. The girls got off to a great start in the first half. A brief lapse at the start of the second half was
all Ballarat needed to take the game away. The Braves worked really hard in the heat and out
positioned their taller opponents a lot in the second half.
Game 3 – Last time we played Echuca in the Swan Hill Grand Final we were comprehensively beaten,
but 13 minutes in it was all even. At half time the girls were only down by 5, with some great
defence and fast transition offence serving us well. In the second half, the older Echuca team sped
away, but some great defence shut down their best player for most of the half.
Game 4 – Once again, up against a taller and older opposition, the girls did really well in the first half
but couldn’t match it in the second. They held on as well as they could, and were strong between
the arcs for most of the game. Their fitness shone as the game went on.
Game 5 – The girls left their best game for last. The older Hamilton team was one of the best drilled
we have ever faced, and the girls managed their defence really week, with the talls under the basket
stopping numerous attacks brilliantly. An uneven foul count made things difficult, with 10-0 in the
later stages of the first half. However, the girls didn’t get their heads down and were only 5 points
down at half time. The girls did their fundamentals brilliantly all game, and learnt a lot about the
benefits of getting the small things right, especially at this level.
