P. 2
On the Cover
A schematic presentation of the dual, modeling and imaging approach to cardiac electrophysiology.
Mathematical modeling is used to integrate phenomena across scales, from the molecular structure of ion
channels to the whole cell and the multicellular tissue. The whole heart is mapped noninvasively in patients
using Electrocardiographic Imaging (ECGI). The ECGI data provide details of the electrophysiologic substrate
and of activation and repolarization on the heart surface. The principles and mechanisms determined by
modeling at the reduced scales guide the interpretation of the whole-heart data.
