for today (1Corinthians 15:3-4). In contrast, notice how
Peter understood the cross during the Old Testament period
of the Lord’s earthly ministry.
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his
disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and
suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying,
Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
(Matthew 16:21,22)
When Jesus Christ explained that He was to be
crucified, Peter rebuked Him and told Him that such a thing
should not happen. Today, we know that Christ's
sacrificial death was necessary to redeem sinful mankind.
Peter, however, did not yet understand this, nor did any of
the other disciples.
For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son
of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they
shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise
the third day.
But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to
ask him. (Mark 9:31,32; see also Luke 18:31-34)
The disciples obviously did not understand the death,
burial, and resurrection. However, Christ had already sent
them out preaching the gospel of the kingdom.
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to
heal the sick. (Luke 9:2)
