In this chapter I will explain that man’s mouth םיִבּרַ ,דֹאְמ ויָתוֹדִּמְבּ ריִהָזְו הרָיִמְשַּׁה תַבוֹח ויָלָע לֵבּקְַמֶּשׁ
is like an opening (like a door opening) and he
must take care that it is not constantly open, but לֵבּקַיִו ,הָכָכּ ןֵכּ םַגּ גֵהַנְתִהְל ויָשֲׂעַמִּמ וּדְמְלִי וירָיִכַּמִּמ
rather it is open only when necessary. Also, that .םרָוּבֲע םַגּ רָכָשׂ
man’s Yetzer Hara crouches by the openings of his
mouth (lips) and lies in ambush there in order to
cause him to sin.
Our sages of blessed memory have taught (Gemara Chagigah
16a) “Man’s own Neshama will testify about him in Olam Haba,
as the pasuk states (Micha 7:5) “From the one who nestles in your
bosom, guard the entranceways to your mouth.” The pasuk is
alluding to man’s mouth as being comparable to a door. Just as one
must be careful not to leave the door of a house constantly open,
but only at times when people are going or coming, because if not,
the house would be completely emptied (robbed). Especially at a
time when thieves and burglars frequent the city the house must
be closed and secured. So too regarding man’s mouth. It should
be opened only when he needs to say something important. In
particular, during those times when man feels a semblance of a
little anger because of some matter, he must be especially careful
that his mouth remains closed and secured, because at that time
the Yetzer Hara lays in waiting near his mouth to make him sin.
And so how beautiful are the words of Chazal who have said
(Gemara Chulin 89a) in commentary on the pasuk (Eyov 26:7)
“Who suspends the Earth on nothingness:” Who is responsible
for the continued existence of the world? (Answer) Those people
