BIKING THROUGH Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties offers a mix of coastal beauty, charming small towns, and scenic countryside. In Atlantic County, riders can pedal along the picturesque shorelines, with stops at bustling boardwalks and historic landmarks. Cape May County offers an unforgettable coastal route, where cyclists can enjoy the quaint Victorian architecture, pristine beaches, and lush natural parks. In Cumberland County, tranquil rural roads, farmlands, and nature reserves provide a peaceful and serene biking experience. Along the way, visitors will encounter friendly locals, delightful eateries, and a rich tapestry of history and culture that makes each ride a unique adventure.
Wildwoods: “Bikeability”. Riding on two wheels is a favorite pastime in the Wildwoods, known for their “bikeability.” Enjoy a scenic, leisurely 12-mile round trip bike route that runs nearly the entire length of the five-mile island. A special “bikes only” lane extends through North Wildwood from 1st to 26th Avenues along Surf Avenue, running parallel to the North Wildwood Sea Wall. Biking is also permitted along the 2.5-mile stretch of the Wildwoods Boardwalk until noon. Wildwood Crest’s bike path runs from the southern end of the Boardwalk to Rambler Road, then zigzags to Seaview Avenue, where the bicycle lane continues to the southernmost end of the resort. www.WildwoodsNJ.com
Cape May Promenade: In the historic landmark City of Cape May, the Promenade is a 2-mile-long paved path along the beachfront,
allowing visitors to cycle past majestic Victorian houses and enjoy panoramic beach views. The Promenade is open to bikers from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. from May to September. It’s a great spot for early risers to catch the sunrise. www.capemaycity.com
Ocean City Boardwalk: In America’s Greatest Family Resort, the Ocean City Boardwalk is a popular destination for cyclists of all ages. This 2.5-mile-long boarded walkway runs along the beachfront, offering stunning ocean views. The boardwalk is open to bikers from 5 a.m. to noon from June through September. www.bikeOCNJ.org
Cape May County Park & Zoo Trail: The Cape May County Park & Zoo features a 2.2-mile trail that runs through the award-winning attraction. The trail is paved and suitable for all skill levels, including stroller and wheelchair accessibility, making it ideal for families with kids. The zoo’s bike paths connect to the Middle Township bike path, which provides
access to the Davies Sports Complex, the 4-H Fairgrounds, and Atlantic Cape Community College. www.cmczoo.com
Middle Township Bike Path: The 8.9-mile Middle Township Bike Path runs south from the Cape May County Park for five miles to Whitesboro, following the old railroad bed of the Cape May Seashore Line. This path connects to the Lower Township bike path, taking riders nearly three miles to Cold Spring Village.
Belleplain State Forest Trails: For a more challenging biking experience, try the Belleplain State Forest Trails. The forest offers several trails catering to different skill levels, passing through lakes and forests, making it perfect for nature lovers.
Atlantic County Bikeway: In Atlantic County, explore the Atlantic County Bikeway, a 7.56- mile trail running from the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in Mays Landing to Harbor Square in Egg Harbor Township. Municipal bike paths also connect Somers Point, Linwood, Northfield and Pleasantville for a really nice and scenic ride.
Cumberland County Biking Trails: Cumberland County offers several biking trails for different skill levels. A popular route is the Maurice River Bikeway in Millville. This 1.4-mile trail runs just off the river from Ware Avenue, offering immediate access to restaurants and shops.
Whether you’re a nature lover or a beach bum, there’s something for everyone. If your bicycles didn’t make the trip, no problem!
