The Story Behind My MFIAP Portfolio

My relationship with photography began long before I
ever imagined it would become my profession or lead me to the
FIAP Master distinction.

a professional photographer himself, he owned a camera store
where films were developed, and photographic equipment was
sold. I literally grew up surrounded by analogue cameras, playing
with them long before I understood their true value.

When the time came to choose my studies in the 1980s, I
decided to pursue Electronics and Computer Science. It was there that I met my wife, Montse
González. Years later, after we got married and our son Aarón was born, Montse gave me my
first digital camera so I could photograph him as he grew up.
The first time I saw a digital image (back then it wasn’t even RAW, only a tiny 1.7-megapixel
TIFF file) I immediately realized that my two greatest passions, photography and computer
science, had finally come together through digital image processing. At that moment I
discovered not just a new camera, but a completely new way of creating images.

Never, even in my wildest dreams, could I have imagined that twenty-three years later this
journey would lead me to receive the distinction of MFIAP (Master FIAP).

My portfolio, “Colors of the World”, is an architectural journey. For more than a decade
I have travelled across Europe, Asia and the Middle East photographing architecture under
exceptional light conditions. Rather than documenting famous landmarks, my intention has Amsterdam
always been to reveal their emotional identity through colour, atmosphere and composition.

Architecture is a universal language. Every building tells the story of a civilisation, its
culture, and its relationship with the surrounding landscape. My goal is to interpret those
stories by waiting for the precise moment when light, weather and colour come together in
perfect harmony.
Colour is the common thread throughout this portfolio. As the author of books on
colour theory and its practical application in photography, I approach every image with
careful planning, long-exposure techniques and meticulous control of visual harmony. Each
photograph is the result of patience rather than chance.
Although these twenty images were created in different countries and cultures, they share
the same visual language: soft gradients, balanced compositions, luminous atmospheres and a
cinematic approach to colour. More than showing monuments, I wanted to create an emotional
journey across the world through architecture.
With “Colors of the World”, I hope viewers discover that architecture is not only something
we see, but also something we can feel through light, colour and atmosphere.
The MFIAP distinction represents far more than recognition for success in international
competitions or for a single portfolio. It is an acknowledgment of a photographer’s entire St Michel2
journey, continuous evolution, and the development of a distinctive photographic identity.
That has always been my true goal.
