 20 SUMMER | 2016
Santa Cruz Shakespeare
Shakespeare comes alive this summer in their brand new venue, “The Grove” in the hills above Santa Cruz. Continuing their tradition
of outdoor theater is a great way to enjoy the works of and inspired by William Shakespeare. This summer the local theater company will
be producing two of Shakespeares works, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Hamlet along with an adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando.
A Midsummer Nights Dream. Set in a mythical forest full of warring fairies, runaway lovers, magic owers and bumbling thespians, Shakespeare’s most popular comedy shows us what love and marriage can be at their most enchanting and maddening moments.
Hamlet. Upset by the death of her mother and the hasty remarriage of her mother, Queen Gertrude, to her uncle Claudius is set on a collision course with self-doubt when her father’s ghost demands that Hamlet avenge his death. Murder, madness, duels and dilemmas abound in Shakepeare’s transcendent and most iconic tragedy.
Orlando. In this adaption of Virginia Woolf’s novel, award winning playwright Sarah Ruhl brings to the stage the life of the period- hopping, gender-bending Orlando. His transformative journey begins in the 16th centurt as the boy-toy lover of Queen Elizabeth and concludes when Orlando has become the female poet in the 20th century. Along the way, we are invited to revel in this sweeping satire
of English literature, gender roles and sexual mores.
