CENTENNiAL PROJECTS
FILL THE CAR FOR HUNGRY
Fill a CAR with FOOD for the needy. Partner with a local dealership and community business to furnish your club with a car to fill with FOOD and park it in a parking lot at the local grocery store, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Walgreens or any local business that will support your event. Work with a local dealership and convince them that this is good advertisement for them too especially if you use a new car. One club has used a Fiat. You will need a great car to attract people.
Donate your FOOD to a local food bank within your community. Ask for food or cash donations. A good publicity move would be to have a salesman from the dealership, someone from the food bank and possibly the mayor in your town to support your project. Chamber of Commerce is another group that can help. Try to advertise your project within your local media outlets both radio and TV.
Set the target date for September 16, 2017 to deliver the food to the food bank. By coordinating this date together, we will be able to advertise how much food was collected from the State of Texas to help the community food banks.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT
Develop an Earth Day Festival on EARTH DAY April 22nd, 2017. Earth Day is a great day for informing communities about the different ways to recycle and save money. This is an opportunity to get involved with your community while focusing on protecting our environment.
• Develop an Earth Day Festival while partnering with your local city recycling department. This way advertising your festival can go out in a water bill getting the word out to every home in the community. Don’t forget the local radio and TV for getting publicity about your event out to the community
• Use a church or school parking lot. The cities will usually support the project with tents so people just drive by and drop off their recycled materials.
• Have a box for eye glasses, paperback books even an area for bicycles. You will find that there
are churches that have men’s groups fix up those recycled bicycles to give to children for Christmas, children that sometimes would never have the opportunity to have one. A truck from a Shredding Co can be available to shred papers right there on sight. Collect old paint containers so that the cities can dispose of the materials properly through approved disposal companies. There are also companies that can take old blankets and sheets. Investigate all of the recycle possibilities.
• Make it a festival with exhibits from the water department showing how to conserve water
effectively or protect foundation around the home. Effective landscaping to save water. Solicit home insurance companies to demonstrate how to save on your home and car insurance. Nurseries are another source that can come and give tips on lawn care. Your energy company shows how to control efficiently the heating and air conditioning of your home. How about safety devices for around the home? There are so many companies your club can bring to the festival to help everyone in the community to get into the recycling efficiency mode. Partnering with and having the community Recycling Department on board for support is great help.
• Do not forget to make pictures. Remember there is the LCI Environmental Photo contest coming up next year.
These are a great centennial projects for your club and communities that gets great exposure.
