NDSM 2018 Report on Adult Eye Clinic
Lion Nia Mackay Dallas Oak Cliff
Every second Friday of the month, Lions from the Oak Cliff Lions Club volunteer at the North Dallas Shared Ministries (NDSM) Adult Eye Clinic at 1500 Merrell St. Dallas, TX from 8 AM to around noon. The monthly clinic is partly funded by District 2-X1 LSTF, provides full eye exam, prescription glasses and frames to a certain group of adults in Dallas, almost all year round.
According to the NDSM official reports sent to our liaison at NDSM, Lion Bobbi Smith, in 2018 a total of 362 adults received eye glasses which equal to $122,590 retail value, but only cost NDSM $5,430 (less than 5%.) The number means that about 30 adults received glasses per month for only $15/pairs. Note that the total cost to NDSM will be higher if they factored in the doctor’s fee and volunteers’ time. This being said, your Clubs contribution is working, got to where we intended to and received by those who needed them. Keep it up. WE SERVE.

Children Eye Clinic

Twenty Oak Cliff Lions served at the Children Eye Clinic on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 7 AM to 1 PM. Lion PP Charlie Tupper, coordinated the Lion volunteers into two shifts, 7 to 9:30 AM and 9:30 AM to 1 PM at 5442 La Sierra, Dallas TX 75231 (North of 75 N. Expressway at Walnut Hill Lane)
On this day, there were 77 students (K12) from Dallas who received full eye exam as well as prescription glasses and frames. Lion Charlie reported that in the many years he has coordinated and volunteered at this clinic, it’s still shocking that many parents didn’t realize that their children need glasses. He also said that many students spoke languages other than English and Spanish.
Thank you to all Lions volunteers and supporters, especially to our Spanish translator Patricia Nielsen (Lion Paul Nielsen’s wife) who made this service possible. The Children Eye Clinic is one of many scheduled eye clinics funded by LSTF. If your club would like to sponsor please contact Lion PDG Kathy Fletcher (LSTF President) at ktbartdoor@aol.com.
