eleventh-grade level by Mr. Paoli and at twelfth-grade level by Mr. McDougall. “Man’s Fall From Innocence” was the subject this past year of the twelfth-grade advanced-placement course.
American and world history are introduced early in the Wardlaw lower school with geography integrated into the program.
High-school students follow a four-year comprehensive course from ancient history to problems of events of today. An advanced-placement course, Modem History 3, which Mr. M. Gale Hoffman, chairman of the department, taught, was available this year to seniors.
Mr. Hoffman is assisted by Mr. Robert K. Hellerson, Mr. George P. Ljutich, Mr. Max J. Munzel, and Mr. Robert A. Paoli.
Also included in the social-studies department this year were a course in ethics, which Mr. Alexander McDougall taught seniors, and a new course, modern living, which soph omores studied. The latter consisted of once-a-week lectures presented by authorities in the fields of such contemporary problems as ethics, morality, social customs, civil dissent, narcotics, health, and sex education.
English is a compulsory course through grade twelve. Em phasis shifts gradually from fundamentals of grammar, spell ing, and composition to more advanced work in literature and writing skills.
Mr. Jacques E. LeGrand, director of studies and head of the English department, teaches twelfth-grade English. Mr. Joseph A. Nolan teaches the juniors and the freshmen. Mr. Alexander McDougall teaches tenth-grade English, and Mr. Lewis B. Timberlake teaches a special ninth-grade course. Mr. Timberlake also teaches a course in journalism to all freshmen. Mr. McE>ouga]l teaches the eighth graders; and

Ultimate aim of the program is production of graduates with an appreciation of literary values and an articulate and effective use of their native tongue.
