 Boy's Basketball
The conclusion of the 88-89 Boys Varsity Basketball Team marked the end of an era for the Wardlaw- Hartridge. Coach Ray Kovonuk, after 20 years of coach ing at W.H. retired at the season. Coach Kovonuk was a credit to his school and profession. A man who prided himself on teaching fundamentals and hard nosed man to man defense Coach Kovinuk will be remembered as a man who was winner in more than the win and loss column.
The Boys Varsity Basketball Team finished with a record of 11-12. Their season got off to a slow start, winning only two of their first eight games. However, they rebounded to win 11 games in a row and managed to beat arch-rival Pennington twice a month. W.H. was competitive in their Prep "B" division, competing closely in almost every game they played.
The rams were a senior dominated team. These eight players were looked to provide leadership and consistent play. Bob Boccher stepped in and did a solid job on both offense and defense. Dusty Wyman, playing center against a taller opponent virtually every game, did a super job providing rebounding and shot blocking abilities. The other three starters are being profiled on this page. Garry Pate, Mark Gruba, Jim Boccher provided consistent bench throughout the season.
Looking back on the season the Rams could have easily won 3-5 more games if they had committed fewer turnovers and made more free throws. But the team played with intensity and drive and had a very exciting season.
