The varsity swimmers clearly de monstrated the meaning of being a team this season. At first unable to come together as a group, they started off with a 1-7 record; but later in the season an improvement in attitude and performance allowed the mermen to win four of their last five meets, bringing the final tally to a respectable 5-8. Outstanding swimmers such as Tom Young, who set a new school record in breast
stroke (1:04.4), Peter Fleck (sprints), John Penvenne (backstroke), and John LeFever (distance), helped make the boys third in the county, despite stiff competition. Helen Ward, who placed first in the States in backstroke and butterfly, Linda Baird (diving), and Laura Rochat (freestyle) were among the outstand ing members who helped the girls place fourth.
