VARSITY SWIMMING
The varsity swimming team, under the direction of Mr. Harold Breene and Mr. Jacques LeGrand, completed an other successful season with an 8-2-2 record. The mermen captured fourth place in both the Union County and the Independent School Group "B" State Championship.
Led by Captain Hugh McPhee, the varsity swimmers got off to a slow start but finally evened their record at 2-2-2 with a victory over Blair Academy and closed the dual-meet season with seven straight victories. The team swam well in the Union County and State Championship meets. In the State Meet the Rams barely missed second place, falling short by only one point.
This year's squad was well balanced. Outstanding in the freestyle sprints (50 and 100 yards) were McPhee, Pete Pomeroy, Mac Fischer, and Bernard Beck. Jim Reydel and Tony Furman swam well in the longer freestyle events. The backstrokers consisted of two top swimmers in Jay Hoff acker and Clay Beall. Reydel and Fred Anthony swam but terfly, while Jim Stine was the top breaststroker.
