Interview with Kaitlyn Sharpe
Advancing the Future of
Podiatric Medicine
How did you select podiatric
medicine as a career?
“I knew medicine was my passion ever since
elementary school. I always enjoyed my math and
science classes. There are so many different avenues
to choose from, I chose podiatry through my
podiatrist, who introduced the field to me. Surgery
always interested me, and I liked that podiatric
medicine is a specialized field. I also liked that there
is a good balance between life and work.”
Where are you in your path to
become a podiatric doctor?
“I completed four years of undergraduate school
at the University of Michigan-Flint where I received
my Baccalaureate degree in Science. I then took the
MCAT and applied for one podiatry school out of
the nine. I have lived in Michigan all of my life and
at that point, I wanted to experience life outside
of Michigan. I interviewed at Rosalind Franklin
University in North Chicago, IL and was accepted
one week later. I was very excited to start the next
chapter in my career.”
“Podiatric medical school entails four years of
didactics and clerkships. The first two years involve
sharing classes with medical students and the last
Kaitlyn Sharpe two years involve classes that are more specific to
Podiatry Resident, 2nd Year the lower extremity. We also start clerkships by our
Ascension Providence Hospital
third year.”
“Currently, I am starting my third and final year
of residency at Ascension Providence Hospital.”
